A Peek at this Week

 ELA:

Reading- We will continue to discuss character traits and how they relate to the story "A Boy Called Slow."  We will also be looking at character traits when we practice writing R.A.C.E.S. responses.

Word Work- Students will work with their Word Work List 4 words:  aud; cardio; de; duct; hydro; and quad.

Writing- While we brainstorm ideas for our narrative, we will continue to practice showing what happened by using dialogue (being in our character's shoes), versus retelling what happened. 

Math: Students will simplify fractions in their lowest terms using the Greatest Common Factor.  They will also be working on adding and subtracting fractions in word problems.

Science:  Students will begin our second unit on Ecosystem Restoration, and will make their own terrarium.

Social Studies:  Students will start Chapter 5 which is about the 13 English colonies.

A Peek at this Week

 ELA:

Reading- We will continue to work on finding the theme of a story, and will continue to discuss the story "A Boy Called Slow."  We will be looking at character traits and will practice writing R.A.C.E.S. responses.

Word Work- Students will continue to work with their Word Work List 3 words:  astro, auto, ject, post, spec, tri.  Students will take their Word Work List 3 Assessment on Thursday, 11/12.

Writing- While we brainstorm ideas for our narrative, we will continue to practice showing what happened by using dialogue (being in our character's shoes), versus retelling what happened. 

Math: Students will find the least common denominator.  Therefore we will be going over how to find the Least Common Multiple (LCM) and Greatest Common Factor (GCF).

Science:  We will do a leaf project on Thursday, and begin our second unit, called "Ecosystem Restorations."

Social Studies:  Students will take a Chapter 4 test Tuesday, 11/10.

A Peek at this week.

ELA:

Reading- We will continue to work on finding the theme of a story, and will begin pre-reading activities for our story "A Boy Called Slow."

Word Work- Students will continue to work with their Word Work List 3 words:  astro, auto, ject, post, spec, tri.  Students will take their Word Work List 3 Assessment on Wednesday, 11/4.

Writing- While we brainstorm ideas for our narrative, we will continue to practice showing what happened by using dialogue (being in our character's shoes), versus retelling what happened. 

Math: Students will be making test corrections on their Unit 1 Post-Test, and we will be working on finding equivalent fractions.

Science:  We will finish reviewing Unit 1 "Patterns of the Earth and Sky," and take the post-test on Thursday, 11/5. 

Social Studies:  We will review Chapter 4, and will take a Chapter 4 test Tuesday, 11/10.

A Peek at this Week

   ELA:

Reading- We will continue to work on pulling out the parts of a short story, in the story "Gertrude Grew Great."

Word Work- Students will continue to work with their Word Work List 3 words:  astro, auto, ject, post, spec, tri.  Students will take their Word Work List 3 Assessment on Friday.

Writing- We will continue brainstorming ideas for our Narrative.

Math: Students will prepare their Math portfolios and Unit 1 reflections.  We will begin unit 2 on Fractions.  Students will be relating fractions to clocks and money.

Science:  We will finish Unit 1 "Patterns of the Earth and Sky."  If things go according to plan we will take our Unit 1 assessment on Thursday.  

Social Studies:  We will review Chapter 4, and will take a Chapter 4 test next week.

  ELA:

Reading- We will continue to work on similes and metaphors.  We will practice doing a close-read using "The Sneetches" and will practice pulling out the parts of a short story.

Word Work- Students will continue to work with their Word Work List 3 words:  astro, auto, ject, post, spec, tri. 

Writing- We will continue brainstorming ideas for our Narrative.

Math:  We will finish our Unit 1 review, and take the Unit 1 test on Wednesday.  Students will prepare their Math portfolios and Unit 1 reflections.  We will begin unit 2 on Fractions.

Science:  We will finish investigating our Chapter 3 question:  "Why do we see different stars at different times in the year?"  We will continue to conducting investigations and using our simulation to discover the answer to that question.

Social Studies:  We will finish our discussion on Lesson 4.2, "Different Worlds Collide."  Then we will begin reading our last lesson in Chapter 4, Lesson 4.3, "Life in New Spain."

Reading- We will continue to work on similes and metaphors.  We started our first unit on "Overcoming Challenges."  We will be reading the poem, "Mother to Son" by Langston Hughes.

Word Work- Students will begin working with their Word Work List 3 words:  astro, auto, ject, post, spec, tri. 

Writing- We will begin brainstorming ideas for our Narrative.

Math:  We will be looking at division, and interpreting remainders.  Then we will be completing station work to finish up Unit 1.  We will take the Unit 1 test next week.

Science:  We will begin investigating our Chapter 3 question:  "Why do we see different stars at different times in the year?"  We will be conducting investigations and using our simulation to discover the answer to that question.

Social Studies:  We will finish our discussion on Lesson 4.2, "Different Worlds Collide."  Then we will begin reading our last lesson in Chapter 4, Lesson 4.3, "Life in New Spain."

Reading- We will continue to focus on author's purpose and will be writing R.A.C.E.S. responses.  We will also review similes and metaphors this week.

Word Work- Students will take their Work Work List 2 Assessment on Friday.   List 2 Word Parts: alter, anti, bi, geo, ology, and script.

Writing- We will begin our narrative unit.  Students will create a baseline narrative writing sample.


Math:  We will continue to focus on finding volume and solving word problems.  Towards the end of the week we will begin looking at division, and interpreting remainders.

Science:  We will finish investigating our Chapter 2 question:  Why is the sun up sometimes, but not other times?"  Students will write a scientific explanation, and practice finding evidence to support their claim.

Social Studies:  We will continue to discuss Lesson 4.2, "Different Worlds Collide."

Reading- We will begin a close read of the poem, "Here's to the Kids who are Different." We will be focusing on author's purpose and will be writing a R.A.C.E.S. response.  We will also review ways to use context clues to help us discover the meaning of unknown words.

Word Work- We will continue to work with our second list of word work word parts: alter, anti, bi, geo, ology, and script.

Writing- We will continue to work on coming up with ideas to write about and building our writing stamina in our Writer's Notebook.


Math:  We will focus on finding volume and solving word problems.  Students will be taking a Multiplication and Volume Checkpoint on Friday.

Science:  We will begin investigating our Chapter 2 question:  Why is the sun up sometimes, but not other times?"  Students will be looking at patterns in the night sky by using the online simulation.

Social Studies:  We will continue to discuss Lesson 4.2, "Different Worlds Collide."

 ELA:

Reading- We will continue to work on making inferences and summarizing.  We will also be learning how to write a reading response.  We will use the R.A.C.E.S. strategy: Restate the question; Answer the question; Cite your evidence; Explain your evidence; Summarize your answer in a concluding sentence.

Word Work- We will work with our second list of word work word parts: alter, anti, bi, geo, ology, and script.

Writing- We will continue to work on coming up with ideas to write about and building our writing stamina in our Writer's Notebook.


Math:  We will be going over multiplication strategies, including the Partial Product strategy:  24 x 35 = (20 x 30) + (20 x 5) + (4 x 30) + (4 x 5).  We will also review multiples, factors, prime numbers, and composite numbers.

Science:  We will review our vocabulary words and work on writing Scientific Explanations.

Social Studies:  We will begin Chapter 4, "Spain Builds and Empire."  We will analyze and summarize Lesson 1, "The Voyages of Columbus."  Then we will read Lesson 4.2, "Different Worlds Collide."

A Peek at Next Week

ELA:

Reading- We will work on making inferences while reading.

Word Work- We will continue to work with our first list of word work word parts: uni, phone, man, bio, aqua, and pre.  Students will take a quiz over Word Work List 1 on Thursday.

Writing- We will continue to work on coming up with ideas to write about and building our writing stamina in our Writer's Notebook.


Math:  We will be going over multiplication strategies and take a checkpoint quiz on Tuesday.


Science:  We will continue to look at different models of the stars.  We will be looking at the size, distance, and brightness of the stars, and how those factors affect what we see in the sky during the day and night.  We will also review our vocabulary words and work on writing Scientific Explanations.

Social Studies:  We will begin Chapter 4, "Spain Builds and Empire."  We will begin to preview and read Lesson 1, "The Voyages of Columbus."

A Peek at this Week

 I hope you all had a fantastic Labor Day weekend!  This Tuesday will be our last smart start day of the school year, so it will be our last half day.  Starting Wednesday we will begin full days.  Please look at the schedule link I sent you in your email.  Below is what we will be working on in our curriculum for this week:


ELA:

Reading- We will be reading stories and articles, and will be finding the main idea and summary of what we read.

Word Work- We will begin working with our first list of word work word parts: uni, phone, man, bio, aqua, and pre. 

Writing- We will continue to work on coming up with ideas to write about and building our writing stamina in our Writer's Notebook.


Math:  We will take our Unit 1 Pre-assessment, and will begin modeling rectangular prisms and finding their volume.


Science:  We will continue to look at different models of the stars.  We will be looking at where the stars are in the sky and the distances between those stars and Earth.


Social Studies:  We will begin to look at how our textbook is set up and begin to think about the early explorers of the Americas.

Reading- We will be researching natural disasters and will be working on our note-taking skills.
Language Arts- We will be reading and interpreting maps and graphs, and then writing up our analysis in our Writer's Notebook.
Word Work- Students will continue to work with List 6 word-parts:  arch, cent, graph, loc, ped/pod, and re.

Science-  Students will begin Unit 2, Chapter 2, "Why aren't the cecropia trees growing and thriving?"  Where in chapter one we looked at what made animals grow, in chapter two we will be looking at what makes plants grow.  We will continue to be looking at how matter and energy move through an ecosystem.

Social StudiesStudents will read and take Cornell notes on Lesson 8.2 "The Colonists Rebel."  We will be discussing the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, and the Intolerable Act.


Math-  Students will finish Unit 3.  We will be practicing division and reviewing our unit.  The unit test will be on Tuesday 2/25.

Sharing Narratives




ELA
Reading- We will begin Unit 2:  Natural Disasters.  We will be looking at our essential questions: What are forces of nature? 
How can a force of nature that is so far away affect me?  
How can a force of nature be both destructive and constructive at the same time?  
What makes an event a natural disaster?
Language Arts- We will begin our unit of study on informational writing.  We will complete a baseline assessment, and will be practicing paraphrasing what we read.
Word Work- Students will continue to work with List 6 word-parts:  arch, cent, graph, loc, ped/pod, and re.

Science-  Students will practice writing claims and finding scientific evidence to back up their claims.  They will still be investigating how animals in an ecosystem thrive and grow.

Social StudiesStudents will begin Chapter 8 "The Road to the Revolution."  We will be reading and taking Cornell notes on Lesson One.

Reading- Students will continue to compare and contrast elements from different stories.  They will also work on Reading Response short answers, and making sure they have evidence from the text in their answers.
Language Arts- We will finish our narratives.  The final draft of our narratives are due on Thursday.
Word Work- Students will continue to work with List 5 word-parts:  a/an, derma, port, dec, photo, struct.

Science-  Students will be investigating the question, "How do organisms in an ecosystem get the food molecules they need?"  Students will be creating a food web model and will be discussing the importance of plants in an ecosystem.

Social StudiesStudents will be taking Cornell notes on lesson 7.3, "The French and Indian War."


Math-  Students will be working on rounding decimals, comparing decimals, and converting measurements.

Reading- Students will finish reading their novels:  Touching Spirit Bear; Bud, Not Buddy; and Crash.  They will meet next week in small groups to discuss their books.
Language Arts- We will be looking at how we can add a flash-forward or flashback into our narratives.
Word Work- Students will work with List 5 word-parts:  a/an, derma, port, dec, photo, struct.

Science-  Students will continue to answer the question, "What makes animals grow?"

Social StudiesStudents will continue to read Chapter 6, with our Trade Fair on Friday.

Math-  Students will be working on adding and subtracting decimals, and reviewing place value with decimals (tenths, hundredths).
