Open House

Just a reminder that on Thursday, April 30th Prairieview will be having an Open House.  Not only can you come see your child's projects, but there will also be a book fair and an ice cream social.  It will be from 6:30-8:00 PM.  I look forward to seeing everyone!

Online Book Fair- Opens 4/25

A Look at Next Week:
Social Studies- We will take cause/effect notes on Lesson 9.3 "The World Turned Upside Down."  We will be discussing the end of the Revolutionary War.

ELA
Reading- We will continue to use multiple sources to look at a single event in history.  Students will read, and listen to Longfellow's poem, "Paul Revere's Ride."  They will then practice reciting certain stanzas of the poem.
Essential Questions:  How does the time period of the hardship impact future decisions and events?
How are hardships in history similar and different?
Word WorkSpelling:  Students will be studying Lesson 33, and will take a test on Friday.
Vocabulary-  Students will play word games on the iPad and Scrabble.

Language Arts- We will continue our unit on verbs.  Students will also continue to practice narrative writing by creating a newspaper about themselves.  


Science- Students will finish Lesson 14.2, and will take an open-note quiz on Tuesday.  Then they will begin to read Lesson 14.3, "What are Chemical Properties and Changes?"  

Math-  Students will learn how to subtract mixed numbers with re-naming or re-grouping (Lesson 9.13).

A Peek at Next Week

A Look at Next Week:
Social Studies- We will take cause/effect notes on Lesson 9.2 "Patriot's at War."  Students will also take the point of view of a soldier who just crossed the Delaware and will be writing a letter home to his or her family describing the event. 

ELA
Reading- We will be using multiple sources to look at a single event in history.  Students will finish reading And Then What Happened Paul Revere?  Then we will look at Longfellow's poem, "Paul Revere's Ride."

Word WorkSpelling:  Students will be studying Lesson 32, and will take a test on Friday.
Vocabulary-  Students will play word games on the iPad and Scrabble.

Language Arts- We will continue our unit on verbs.  

Science- Students will read Lesson 14.2 "What are Physical Properties and Changes?"  We will read and take notes on the lesson.  The class will also observe an experiment dealing with the density of different liquids, and the difference between solutions and mixtures.

Math-  Students will take a quiz over adding and subtracting fractions on Monday.  Then we will work on adding and subtracting mixed numbers (Lessons 9.9-9.12).

A Peek at Next Week

A Look at Next Week:
Social Studies- We will continue to read Lesson 9.1 "Declaring Independence."  After we discuss this lesson we will continue to take cause and effect notes, and then we will be doing a close read of the actual Declaration of Independence. 

ELA
Reading- Students will begin our new unit titled "Hardships in History."  Our first activity will be to do a close read of the song "Yankee Doodle," and see how its meaning changed over time.  
Essential Questions:  How does the time period of the hardship impact future decisions and events?
How are hardships in history similar and different?
Word WorkSpelling:  Students will be studying Lesson 31, and will take a test on Friday.
Vocabulary-  Students will play word games on the iPad and Scrabble.

Language Arts- We will begin our unit on verbs.  We will be going over action verbs, direct objects, and helping verbs.  

Science- We have started Ch. 14 "Properties of Matter."  We will continue to read and discuss Lesson 14.1 "What is the Structure of Matter?"  We have discussed mass, volume, and atoms this past week.  Next week we will be looking at the periodic table, atomic numbers, and the three phases of matter. We will take an open-note quiz on Friday.

Math-  We reviewed Greatest Common Factors (GCF), Least Common Multiples (LCM), simplifying fractions, and comparing fractions.  We also went over rounding fractions to zero, half, or one, and we used number lines to help us.  We then reviewed adding and subtracting like fractions, and just began adding unlike fractions.  Next week will also subtract unlike fractions, and show our work through models.  We will take a quiz over adding and subtracting decimals on Wednesday.
