Happy Holidays!

Thank you so much for letting me work with your students.  It has been wonderful to get to know all the children and I am very lucky to have such wonderful classes.  I hope you all have a lovely holiday with your family and friends.  Enjoy your time together!


A Look at Next Week:
Spelling- We will be doing Lesson 15 and we will take the test on Friday.

Social Studies- We will begin Chapter 6 on Colonial Life.

Reading- We will begin our unit on historical fiction.  Students will be reading some stories out of our literature book.

Language Arts- Students will continue to do some descriptive writing, and will begin our unit on punctuation.

Science- We will continue to study Chapter 14 on Matter.  Students will read and take notes on Lesson 2:  Phases of Matter.

Math-  Students will work on some problem solving skills and then we will begin Unit 6 which deals with decimals.

A Look at Next Week:
Spelling- Students will do two spelling activities with a list of holiday words, but there will be no test.

Social Studies- We will begin reading Chapter 6, Lesson 1 in our books, about colonial life.

Reading- We will meet in our literature circles on Tuesday, and we will continue to work on skills out of our ISAT books.

Language Arts- Students will be working on their descriptive writing.

Science- We will continue our chapter on Matter.  Students will have an open note assessment on Lesson 14.1 on Wednesday.

Math-  We will finish Chapter 4 and take a Ch.4 test on Wednesday.

Social Studies- Students will read about the Puritans and continue to discuss the colony of Plymouth.

Reading- We will meet for the first time in our literature groups to discuss our novels.

Language Arts- Students will continue to work on adjectives.

Science- We will virtually dissect owl pellets in preparation for our actual dissection.

Math-  We will review division, and start our new chapter when we get back from Thanksgiving.

WEEK OF NOVEMBER 18



THINK ENERGY program
Our 5th grade will be participating in an activity provided by Nicor Gas and Com Ed called THINK ENERGY.  The goal of this program is to help students and their families learn about energy and how to use it more wisely.  Your child will be bringing home a "Take Action Kit" on November 15th, and parents are encouraged to review the contents with their child. A student guide is provided to help get started.  You will get to keep all of the items for energy in your kit! The goal of this program is to help students and their families learn together about energy and how to use it more wisely, save money, and help conserve natural resources!
 If you need help with an item there is a toll free number on the kit's box.
****** Lastly, in the kit there is a YELLOW "HOME ENERGY WORKSHEET" that is very easy to fill out.

Community Service Opportunity
Prairieview School (3rd, 4th and 5th graders) is proud to have an opportunity to sponsor an Edward Hospital therapy dog. Students attended an assembly to learn about this special program, and were asked to earn a few dollars doing small jobs/chores. A flyer went home on Tuesday with more specific information. If you choose to participate, coupon sheets and money need to be returned to school by NOVEMBER 19th!!!!

Science-     We will learn about Barn Owls. Find some information about Barn Owls and share it with the class next week before we start our unit!

WEEK OF NOVEMBER 11-15

Reading Projects: The students are to read a REALISTIC FICTION book.
 They will be making a memory bag to go along with their story and give a small presentation at the end. The final due date for the project is November, 7. 

Language Arts-  We will Continue with Chapter 2. We will learn about :Common and Proper Nouns, Writing with Nouns, Singular and Plural Nouns,  Singular Possessive Nouns, and Plural Possessive Nouns. CHAPTER TEST IS ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7.

The Halloween parade and party at school has a few guidelines to remember:
All costumes have to be able to go over your child's clothes. Nothing that resembles a weapon is allowed.
Home Baked items are also not allowed due to allergies.

The students should create reading goals by setting a certain number of pages to be read each week. They will be making a memory bag to go along with their story and give a small presentation at the end. The final due date for the project is November, 7. (Only 3 weeks away!)

Language Arts-  We will Continue with Chapter 2. We will learn about :Common and Proper Nouns, Writing with Nouns, Singular and Plural Nouns,  and Singular Possessive Nouns.

Science-   We will begin Chapter 6 - Ecosystems and Change.

Math-   Chapter 2: Multiply Whole Numbers  CHAPTER TEST IS ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 22. 
The students should review their textbook, homework sheets and their notes in their spirals.They took a practice test in class on Friday and this should be helpful for them to practice. On Wednesday, we will begin Chapter 3.
L1- Relate Division to MultiplicationUsing related multiplication facts to solve division problems and related division facts to solve multiplication problems.
L2- Division Models- Use models to represent and solve division problems.

Science-   We will continue Chapter 5 on How Energy is Passed Through an Ecosystem. We will learn about food webs, the energy pyramid and natural cycles. We will have our Chapter test Thursday, October 17th. The students should begin reviewing their notes in their Science folder and their vocabulary cards. 

Math-   Chapter 2: Multiply Whole Numbers  
We learned about prime and composite numbers and the divisibility rule. I encouraged the students to remember these rules ( in math spiral). We learned several strategies for identifying the prime factors of whole numbers, and understand how to express prime factorization correctly. We also learned about powers and exponents, and the distributive property. We will learn this week how to estimate products, multiply one and two digit numbers. *The students should regularly practice their multiplication facts. We will practice as a warm up for math each day this week. We are practicing our fluency and quickness!
