A Peek at Next Week

A Look at Next Week:
Social Studies- Students will take a test on Chapter 10 on Wednesday.
  
ELA
Reading- We will discuss Manifest Destiny.  Students will break into groups and create a slide presentation either for or against westward expansion.  
Essential Questions:  How does the time period of the hardship impact future decisions and events?
How are hardships in history similar and different?
Word WorkSpelling:  We are done with Spelling for the year!
Vocabulary-  Students will play word games on the iPad and Scrabble.
Language Arts- We will be working on argumentative or persuasive writing, as it ties into our discussion on Manifest Destiny.  

Science- Students will take an open-note quiz on Lesson 15.3 "Heat Transfer" on Tuesday.  Then we will read and discuss Lesson 15.4 on conserving energy.

Math-  We will be learning about volume.  Students will be finding the volume of prisms.

Tuesday- Public Libraries Visit about Summer Programs
Friday- 5th Grade Bowling Field Trip

A Peek at Next Week

A Look at Next Week:
Social Studies- We will discuss the meaning of the Preamble and finish notes on Lesson 10.2.
  
ELA
Reading- We will finish our discussion of "Katie's Trunk."  Then we will do a brief time-line of history that will lead up to Manifest Destiny. 
Essential Questions:  How does the time period of the hardship impact future decisions and events?
How are hardships in history similar and different?
Word WorkSpelling:  Students will be spelling their new vocabulary words and will take a test on Friday.  Spelling words:  Tory, arming, skittish, just, fierce, skirmish, peered, rebels, and kin
Vocabulary-  Students will play word games on the iPad and Scrabble.
Language Arts- We will continue our unit on verbs.  

Science- Students will finish taking notes on Lesson 15.2 "What are Some Forms of Energy."  We will probably take an open-note quiz on this lesson on Friday.

Math-  We will be dividing fractions.  Then we will hopefully take an assessment on multiplying and dividing fractions on Thursday.

Monday- Memorial Day- No School

A Peek at Next Week

A Look at Next Week:
Social Studies- We will finish discussing Lesson 10.1, and will read lesson 10.2.  Students will discuss the revisions made to the Articles of Confederation, and will begin memorizing the Preamble.  
ELA
Reading- We will begin to read our new story "Katie's Trunk," which is written from a loyalist's (Tory) point of view. 
Essential Questions:  How does the time period of the hardship impact future decisions and events?
How are hardships in history similar and different?
Word WorkSpelling:  Students will be working on Lesson 34 and will take a test on Friday.
Vocabulary-  Students will play word games on the iPad and Scrabble.

Language Arts- We will continue our unit on verbs.  


Science- Students will read and take notes on Lesson 15.1 "Energy."  We will probably take an open-note quiz on this lesson on Thursday.

Math-  We will be multiplying fractions.  We will start with multiplying fractions with whole numbers, fractions by fractions, and then mixed numbers.

Happy Mother's Day!

A Look at Next Week:
Social Studies- We will begin to read and discuss Chapter 10.  We will be looking at the Articles of Confederation and discussing the Federalists papers.  

ELA
Reading- We will continue to use multiple sources to look at a single event in history.  We are practicing reading with expression and feeling.  Students will continue to practice reciting certain stanzas of  Longfellow's poem.  They will also compare and contrast the different accounts they have read about Paul Revere's ride.
Essential Questions:  How does the time period of the hardship impact future decisions and events?
How are hardships in history similar and different?
Word WorkSpelling:  Students will be working with our ELA vocabulary, and will take a test on Friday.  The words will be: determination, custom, reputation, extended, triumph, inherited, integrity, prejudice, apathetic, and humiliation   
Vocabulary-  Students will play word games on the iPad and Scrabble.

Language Arts- We will continue our unit on verbs.  Students will begin to type up their final drafts of their newspaper articles. 


Science- Students will review Chapter 14 on matter, and take a test on Wednesday.  

Math-  We will review adding and subtracting mixed numbers, and will hopefully take a quiz over this on Thursday.  There are two main ways to subtract mixed numbers; one is to use borrowing and regrouping, and the other is to turn the mix number into an improper fraction, subtract, and simplify.  Here are two youtube videos that show the two methods:

Social Studies- We will review Chapter 9 and will take the chapter test on Thursday.  

ELA
Reading- We will continue to use multiple sources to look at a single event in history.  Students will continue to read, and listen to Longfellow's poem, "Paul Revere's Ride."  They will then practice reciting certain stanzas of the poem.
Essential Questions:  How does the time period of the hardship impact future decisions and events?
How are hardships in history similar and different?
Word WorkSpelling:  Students will be working with our ELA Unit 3 vocabulary, and will take a test on Friday.  The words will be:  scattered, targets, broadside, Minutemen, taunt, and compliment.
Vocabulary-  Students will play word games on the iPad and Scrabble.

Language Arts- We will continue our unit on verbs.  Students will also continue to write articles for their newspapers about themselves.  This week we will write a rough draft about our personal goals.

Science- Students will finish discussing Lesson 14.3, "What are Chemical Properties and Changes?"  

Math-  We will continue to go over how to subtract mixed numbers with re-naming or re-grouping (Lesson 9.13).
