WEEK OF NOVEMBER 4-8


THANK YOU TO ALL THE PARENTS THAT VOLUNTEERED THEIR TIME TO MAKE THE HALLOWEEN PARTY A HUGE SUCCESS!  THE GAMES, SNACKS AND PREPARATIONS WERE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!

Social Studies-   Chapter 5 - "The Struggle to Found Colonies"
Lesson 1 - 1607 Jamestown
Hard Times in Virginia, The Spanish Armada, John Smith, Self-Government in Virginia. We will continue with this lesson next week.

Reading-  Non-Fiction Text Organization. We will: Identify thin and thick questions, compare and contrast the overall structure of information in texts (text structure, text features, graphic organizers), homonyms and multi- meaning words. Our theme for this unit is "Natures Fury". We will continue using a variety of Non-Fiction texts to reinforce these skills. 

Reading Projects: The students are to read a REALISTIC FICTION book.
 They will be making a memory bag to go along with their story and give a small presentation at the end. The final due date for the project is November, 7. 

Language Arts-  We will Continue with Chapter 2. We will learn about :Common and Proper Nouns, Writing with Nouns, Singular and Plural Nouns,  Singular Possessive Nouns, and Plural Possessive Nouns. CHAPTER TEST IS ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7.

Science-    Chapter 6 - Ecosystems and Change.  
Lesson 1-"How Do Organisms Compete and Survive in an Ecosystem?" In this lesson we will learn about interactions in nature, symbiosis, predator-prey relationships.

Math-    Chapter 3 - Divide by a One-Digit Divisor
L 1- Relate Division to MultiplicationUsing related multiplication facts to solve division problems and related division facts to solve multiplication problems.
L 2- Division ModelsUse models to represent and solve division problems.
L 3- 2 Digit Dividends- Division of whole numbers involving a repeated process of dividing, multiplying and subtracting (both with and without remainders)  
L 4- Division Patterns- Using basic multiplication facts and patterns to divide multiples of 10, 100 and 1000 mentally.
L 5- Estimate Quotients- Using compatible numbers to divide mentally to estimate quotients. 
L 6- Division Models with Greater Numbers- Using models to find quotients of 3-digit dividends and 1-digit dividends.
L 7- Distributive Property and Partial Quotients
L 8-  Divide Three and Four-Digit Dividends
L 9- Place The First Digit
 We will also work on our quickness and fluency on our division facts!

WEEK OF OCTOBER 28-NOVEMBER 1


The Halloween parade and party at school has a few guidelines to remember:
All costumes have to be able to go over your child's clothes. Nothing that resembles a weapon is allowed.
Home Baked items are also not allowed due to allergies.

The students should create reading goals by setting a certain number of pages to be read each week. They will be making a memory bag to go along with their story and give a small presentation at the end. The final due date for the project is November, 7. (Only 3 weeks away!)

Language Arts-  We will Continue with Chapter 2. We will learn about :Common and Proper Nouns, Writing with Nouns, Singular and Plural Nouns,  and Singular Possessive Nouns.

Science-   We will begin Chapter 6 - Ecosystems and Change.

Math-   Chapter 2: Multiply Whole Numbers  CHAPTER TEST IS ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 22. 
The students should review their textbook, homework sheets and their notes in their spirals.They took a practice test in class on Friday and this should be helpful for them to practice. On Wednesday, we will begin Chapter 3.

Week of October 14 - 18

Language Arts-  We will begin Chapter 2 . We will begin this chapter learning about nouns.

Science-   We will continue Chapter 5 on How Energy is Passed Through an Ecosystem. We will learn about food webs, the energy pyramid and natural cycles. We will have our Chapter test Thursday, October 17th. The students should begin reviewing their notes in their Science folder and their vocabulary cards. 

Math-   Chapter 2: Multiply Whole Numbers  
We learned about prime and composite numbers and the divisibility rule. I encouraged the students to remember these rules ( in math spiral). We learned several strategies for identifying the prime factors of whole numbers, and understand how to express prime factorization correctly. We also learned about powers and exponents, and the distributive property. We will learn this week how to estimate products, multiply one and two digit numbers. *The students should regularly practice their multiplication facts. We will practice as a warm up for math each day this week. We are practicing our fluency and quickness!

WEEK OF OCTOBER 7 - 11

WEEK OF OCTOBER 7-11
A Look at Next Week:

Social Studies- We will continue with Chapter 4 "Spain Builds and Empire" 
We will continue on Lesson 3 learning about the structure of society in 'New Spain" and how the native people lost their traditional way of life. We will end our unit this week. We will have our Chapter test on Wednesday. The students are encouraged to review their notes and their textbooks. They are not able to use either of these during the test.  The test will have both multiple choice and questions asking for complete sentences. 

Reading-  We will finish up work with Tall Tales by the students writing their own tall tale. This week we will begin Unit 2: Non-Fiction Text Organization. We will: Identify thin and thick questions, compare and contrast the overall structure of information in texts (text structure, text features, graphic organizers), homonyms and multi- meaning words. Our theme for this unit is "Natures Fury". We will begin by reading Earthquake Terror.

Language Arts-  We will be writing a Pyramid Poem this week. The student will choose a picture and write their poems using what they learned in this unit. This will end our unit on sentences. We will have our chapter test on Thursday. The students should be able to identify sentences fragments, the 4 different types of sentences           ( imperative, declarative, interrogative and exclamatory), complete and simple subjects, complete and simple predicates, conjunctions and run-on sentences. 

Science-   We will continue Chapter 5 on How Energy is Passed Through an Ecosystem. We will learn about food webs, the energy pyramid and natural cycles.

We will then move to multiplication patterns, problem solving , use partial products and the distributive property.
