A Peek at the Week

                Sharing Published Narratives:







A Look at this Week:
Science- Students will continue to read about kinetic and potential energy.  They may also be working on STEM stations this week.

ELA
Reading- Students continue our research project for Unit 1.  Students are researching a famous person who has faced at least two challenges in his/her life.  They will then create a Google Slide Presentation about how that person overcame those challenges, and how this impacted people around them.  

Language Arts- Students will review their grammar skills, and will work on writing from a different character's perspective.

Word Work- Students will continue to review Word Work Units 1-4.

Math- Students will be looking at the many different ways they can add or subtract fractions.

Important Days:
Tuesday- Whole School viewing of Wonder, 7:00PM Choir and Band Concert at LV (Students need to arrive at 6:30PM)
Wednesday- 5th Grade Bowling Trip
Thursday- 5th Grade Holiday Movie Theater
Friday- No School, Winter Break!

A Peek at this Week

Working on Social Studies Projects:











A Look at this Week:
Social Studies- Students finished their Social Studies projects and shared them with the class.  Next we will begin our Chapter 15 Science unit on Energy.

ELA
Reading- Students will begin our research project for Unit 1.  Students will research a famous person who has faced at least two challenges.  They will create a Google Slide Presentation about how that person overcame those challenges, and how this impacted people around them.  Students will also take a selection quiz over Ch.6 in Touching Spirit Bear on Monday.

Language Arts- Students will work on the ending of their narratives, and publish their final drafts.  Students will be taking an assessment covering prepositions, conjunctions, interjections, and titles on Tuesday.

Word Work- Students will be reviewing Word Work Units 1-4.


Math-  This past week we have been using money and clock models to help students add and subtract fractions.  Then we will begin to go over Least Common Multiples (LCM) and Least Common Denominators (LCD).

Happy Thanksgiving!

Well the fifth grade students survived their Robert Crown presentation, and brought home books that review the material that was covered.  Please take the time to talk to your child about the presentation they saw today.  

After lunch students wrote great stories about Thanksgiving from the turkey's point of view or perspective.  Then as a class we shared what we were thankful for, and wrote notes to people we were thankful to have in our lives.   

I am very thankful to be teaching these terrific fifth graders.  

I hope you all have a wonderful rest of your week and a terrific Thanksgiving!

A Look at next Week:
Social Studies- We will begin reviewing Chapter 4 and take an assessment by Friday the 1st. 

ELA
Reading- We will read Ch. 6 of Touching Spirit Bear, and students will be discussing the perspective the story is told from.

Language Arts- We will continue to revise our narratives, making sure we are adding relevant detail to our stories.  Students will also be learning to read through the lens of a writer, and learning from mentor texts.

Word Work- Students will continue to work on Unit 4 word parts: aud, cardio, de, duct, hydro, and quad.  Students will take a Unit 4 quiz on Thursday.

Math-  Students will take their Unit 1 test on Tuesday (11/28).  Then we will begin Unit 2 "Adding and Subtracting Fractions."

A Look at this Week:
Social Studies- We will finish taking notes on Lesson 4.3 "Life in New Spain." 

ELA
Reading- We will continue to discuss different stories' points of view, and how that affects the reader's perspective of the events unfolding in the story.

Language Arts- We have been revising our narratives, looking at the heart of our stories and making sure we have a story arc, now we will be making sure we are adding relevant detail to our stories.

Word Work- Students will continue to work on Unit 4 word parts: aud, cardio, de, duct, hydro, and quad.


Math-  Students will be reviewing Unit 1, and will be taking a Unit 1 test the Tuesday (11/28) after Thanksgiving break.

A Look at this Week:
Science/Social Studies- We finished reading Lesson 4.1 "The Voyage of Columbus" and we will start to take web notes.  Students will also research different parts of the Columbian Exchange.

ELA
Reading- Students will continue to practice writing reading response answers using our R(restate)A(answer)C(cite evidence)E(explain) strategy.  We will also be looking at the story elements in A Boy Called Slow, and take a selection quiz on that reading on Friday.

Language Arts- Now that students have their seed idea for their narratives, they will be focusing on finding the heart of their stories, or what their stories are really about. Students will also be making sure that their narratives have a story arc, or all the elements that make up a short story.

Word Work- Students will begin to work on Unit 4 word parts: aud, cardio, de, duct, hydro, and quad.


Math-  Students will be reviewing volume, and will continue to learn various multiplication strategies.

A Peek at Next Week

A Look at Next Week:
Science/Social Studies- Students will finish presenting their posters representing their research on an element from the Periodic Table.  We will also begin our first Social Studies Unit, Chapter 4:  "Spain Builds an Empire".  We will read Lesson 4.1 "The Voyage of Columbus" and start to take web notes.

ELA
Reading- Students will continue to practice writing reading response answers using our R(restate)A(answer)C(cite evidence)E(explain) strategy.  We will also be looking at the story elements in A Boy Called Slow, and take a selection quiz on that reading on Friday.

Language Arts- Students will look back at their writing and reflect on where they are on the 5th Grade Narrative Writing Checklist/Rubric.  From that they will make writing goals, and chose a topic for their narrative.  In grammar, we will be learning about how to punctuate titles. 

Word Work- Students will will take a Unit 3 Assessment on Wednesday.  Unit 3 word parts: astro, auto, ject, post, spec, and tri.


Math-  Students will be reviewing volume, and beginning to learn various multiplication strategies.

A Peek at Next Week

A Look at This Week:
Science- Students will research and present their findings on an element from the Periodic Table.

ELA
Reading- Students will continue to practice writing reading response answers using our R(restate)A(answer)C(cite evidence)E(explain) strategy.  Students will take a Selection Quiz over "Mother to Son" and Teammates on Friday.  

Language Arts- We will continue to come up with ideas for our Narrative Writing unit.  We will be discussing how other writers can inspire us to become better writers, and how to read like a writer.  For our grammar unit, we will be taking an assessment on commas on Thursday. It will be on commas in a series, commas in introductory words and direct address, and commas in tag questions.  Notes should be in the back of your student's writing notebooks and students may also look back at their assignments on Google Classroom.  

Word Work- Students will will take a Unit 2 Assessment on Wednesday.  Unit 2 word parts: alter, anti, bi, geo, ology, and script.

Math-  Students will continue to discuss volume, and we will begin Unit 1, Module 2 on numerical expressions.

A Peek at Next Week

A Look at This Week:
Science- Students will take an open-note quiz on Lesson 14.3 on Tuesday.  Then we will review the rest of the week and take a Chapter 14 Test on Friday.

ELA
Reading- We will begin reading Teammates, which is a story about Jackie Robinson.  Students will practice writing reading response answers using our R(restate)A(answer)C(cite evidence)E(explain) strategy.  
Language Arts- We will continue to come up with ideas for our Narrative Writing unit.  Then in grammar, we will also continue to use commas in a series correctly in our writing.  
Word Work- Students will finish working on their Unit 2 word parts and slides that have been assigned to them in their Google Classroom.  They will take a Unit 2 Assessment on Thursday.  Unit 2 word parts: alter, anti, bi, geo, ology, and script.

Math-  Students will take their Unit 6 test on Monday.  Then we will begin Unit 1 "Expressions, Equations, and Volume."

Thursday- Soccer Assessment in PE

A Peek at This Week

A Look at This Week:
Science- Students will take an open-note quiz on Lesson 14.2 on Monday.  Then we will begin Lesson 14.3 on chemical changes.

ELA
Reading- We will finish answering comprehension questions and making inferences based on the poem we read in class, "Mother to Son" by Langston Hughes.  Then we will introduce our next story, Teammates, (about Jackie Robinson,) and go over perspective.  
Language Arts- We will work on coming up with ideas for our Narrative Writing unit.  We will discuss small moments, or turning points in our lives that can make a good story.  Then in grammar, we will continue to use commas in a series correctly in our writing.  
Word Work- Students will begin working on their Unit 2 word parts and slides that have been assigned to them in their Google Classroom.

Math-  Students will continue to learn about volume and review for their Unit 6 test, which is scheduled for this Friday.


Important Days:
Tuesday-  Magazine Turn-in Day
Wednesday- Early Dismissal at 11:00AM
Friday- Movie Night (Sing!) 6:30-8:30

A Peek at Next Week

A Look at Next Week:
Science- We will begin discussing and taking cornell notes on Lesson 14.2, "What are Physical Properties and Changes?"  

ELA
Reading- We will continue to learn our classroom routines and expectations, as well as writing discussion questions, and annotating texts during close-reads. We will begin Unit 1 "Overcoming Challenges" on Wednesday.  Students will also review figurative language, they will be working with similes and metaphors. 
Language Arts- We will continue to build our writing stamina in our Writer's Notebook.  We will also introduce our unit on narrative writing.  
Word Work- Students will take their first Word Work Unit 1 assessment on  Wednesday.  The Unit 1 words are in students' Reading notebooks and in their Google Classroom.
Unit 1 word parts are:  aqua, bio, man, phon, pre, and uni.


Math-  Students will take a Shape Classification Checkpoint (Unit 6, Module 2 open-note quiz) on Tuesday.  They will then begin Unit 6, Module 3, "Volume."

Thursday-  Magazine Turn-in Day

A Look at This Week:
Science- We will finish discussing Lesson 14.1 "What is the structure of Matter?"  Students will take a 14.1 open-note quiz on Wednesday.  

ELA
Reading- We will continue to learn our classroom routines and expectations, as well as writing discussion questions, and annotating texts during close-reads. 
Language Arts- We will continue to build our writing stamina in our Writer's Notebook.  
Word Work- We will continue to study our first Word Work unit and station expectations.

Math-  We will continue to study Unit 6, Module 1,  "Graphing Ordered Pairs" and take our first checkpoint, or open-note quiz, on Tuesday.  We will then begin Unit 6, Module 2, "Classifying Polygons."

Welcome Back!

Welcome to a new school year!  I hope everyone is finally settling in.  Thank you to all that came out for Curriculum Night, it was great to see everyone.  

A Look at Next Week:
Science- We will begin Chapter 14 "Properties of Matter."  We will be working on taking Cornell Notes while we read Lesson 14.1 "What is the structure of Matter?"  Students will be learning about atoms, molecules, elements and the periodic table.  

ELA
Reading- We will continue to learn our classroom routines and expectations, as well as working on inferencing, and differentiating between the main idea and a summary. 
Language Arts- We will continue to build our writing stamina in our Writer's Notebook.  
Word Work- We will introduce our first word work unit and station expectations.

Math-  We will begin Unit 6, Module 1:  "Graphing Ordered Pairs."  We will be discovering, describing and graphing different patterns.


Important Days:
Monday- No School, Labor Day
