Opening STEM Activity: Building a Boat

Opening STEM Activity

Can your make a boat, keeping your

animals upright and dry for 15 seconds?

Look at this Week:

ELA:

Writer's Workshop:  We will continue to build our writing stamina in our notebooks.  We have worked our way up to 7 solid minutes of writing.

Reading Skills: Students will continue to work on finding the central idea and summarizing the text.  This past week we discussed the author's purpose and point view in our story "Inventor's Secret."

Word Work: Students will be focusing on using context clues to help them with unknown words.

Essential Vocab: excel, illustrious, transcend, revere

Math: Students will continue to practice multiplication strategies (double and halving, and the over strategy).  They will also be reviewing prime and composite numbers, and factors and multiples.

Science:  Ms. Sanchez (our STEM coach) will be coming in and helping guide our class to build a balloon car, making connections to our Reading unit on inventing. So far we have discussed how failing is not only a vital part to the scientific method, but also with making revisions to our work. Teams  brainstormed ideas, drew a model of the car, and listed their materials.  Our next step is to build the car!

After discussing the scientific method, we will also begin our first unit in science, Chemical Magic.  This week we will be introducing the topic and journaling about it.

Social Studies:  Students will discuss Lesson 4.1 "The Voyages of Columbus." We will be discussing the Columbian Exchange, and the impact of Columbus's voyages.

Important Days:
