Math Team Building

Math: Team Building and Breakouts!

Look at this Week:

ELA:

Writer's Workshop:  We will continue to build our writing stamina in our notebooks.  We have worked our way up to 6 solid minutes of writing, and are hoping to eventually make it to 15 minutes.

Reading Skills: Students will continue to work on finding the central idea and summarizing the text.  They will also continue to read about inventors in our Into Reading book.  This past week we read the story "Inventor's Secret" about Thomas Edison and Henry Ford.

Word Work: Students will be focusing on using context clues to help them with unknown words.

Essential Vocab: excel, illustrious, transcend, revere

Math: Students will be taking a checkpoint on writing expressions and solving equations.  They will be reviewing the order of operations, and the multiplication strategy of double and halving.

Science:  Ms. Sanchez (our STEM coach) will be coming in and helping guide our class build a balloon car, making connections to our Reading unit on inventing. So far we have discussed how failing is a vital part to the scientific method, and with making revisions to our work. Teams then brainstormed ideas for how they will be building their cars.  This week they will be drawing a model of their car, and listing the materials they will be using.

After discussing the scientific method, we will also begin our first unit in science, Chemical Magic.  This week we will be introducing the topic and journaling about it.

Social Studies:  Students will begin Lesson 4.1 "The Voyages of Columbus." So far we have discussed how the Eastern and Western Hemispheres were very isolated during this time period.  As we read Chapter 4 we will be discussing how Columbus's voyages were just the first of many European explorations of the Western Hemisphere, and the impact that it had on the indigenous people in the Americas and people back home.
