Week of October 14 - 18



WEEK OF OCTOBER 14 - 18, 2013

A Look at Next Week:
Spelling- Lesson 7     -0 or -1 will be in Challenge group

Social Studies-  We will begin Chapter 5 - "The Struggle to Found Colonies"
Lesson 1 - 1607 Jamestown
Hard Times in Virginia, The Spanish Armada, John Smith, Self-Government in Virgina

Reading-  Non-Fiction Text Organization. We will: Identify thin and thick questions, compare and contrast the overall structure of information in texts (text structure, text features, graphic organizers), homonyms and multi- meaning words. Our theme for this unit is "Natures Fury". We will begin by reading Earthquake Terror. 

Reading Projects: The students are to read a REALISTIC FICTION book.
The students should create reading goals by setting a certain number of pages to be read each week. They will be making a memory bag to go along with their story and give a small presentation at the end. The final due date for the project is November, 7.

Language Arts-  We will begin Chapter 2 . We will begin this chapter learning about nouns.

Science-   We will continue Chapter 5 on How Energy is Passed Through an Ecosystem. We will learn about food webs, the energy pyramid and natural cycles. We will have our Chapter test Thursday, October 17th. The students should begin reviewing their notes in their Science folder and their vocabulary cards. 

Math-   Chapter 2: Multiply Whole Numbers  
We learned about prime and composite numbers and the divisibility rule. I encouraged the students to remember these rules ( in math spiral). We learned several strategies for identifying the prime factors of whole numbers, and understand how to express prime factorization correctly. We also learned about powers and exponents, and the distributive property. We will learn this week how to estimate products, multiply one and two digit numbers. *The students should regularly practice their multiplication facts. We will practice as a warm up for math each day this week. We are practicing our fluency and quickness!
