A Peek at this Week

Math: Building Volume Villages






Look at this Week:

ELA:  

Writer's Workshop:  We will continue researching an inventor that we will eventually be writing about in an expository essay.  

Reading Skills: We will continue to look at different text structures for non-fiction texts.  We will finish up our discussions about "Wheelchair Sports" and begin reading "Captain Arsenio: (Mis)Adventures in Flight."

Word Work: Students will be working with words with either a long a or long e vowel sound such as: praise, stray, release, exceed, or thief.  (Lists are in the back of students' reading notebooks).

Essential Vocab: maneuver, elite, traditional, observe, and specialized (back of students' reading notebook)

Math: Students will finish creating their spooky volume village, and will begin Unit 2 on Fractions.

Science:  Students will continue investigating where all the energy in an ecosystem originates.

Social Studies:  Students will be sharing their Chapter 4 choice-board activities.

A Peek at Next Week

 Look at next Week:

ELA:  

Writer's Workshop:  We will begin to research an inventor that we will eventually be writing an expository essay about.  We will be in the pre-writing stages next week, where we will be gathering information.

Reading Skills: We will continue to look at different text structures for non-fiction texts.  We will read "Wheelchair Sports" and pull out the central idea, and discuss how the text is organized. 

Word Work: Students will be working with words with either a long a or long e vowel sound such as: praise, stray, release, exceed, or thief.  (Lists are in the back of student's reading notebooks).

Essential Vocab: maneuver, elite, traditional, observe, and specialized (back of student's reading notebook)


Math: Students will take their Unit 1 test on Tuesday.  They will also continue to create their spooky volume village.

Science:  Students will be investigating where all the energy in an ecosystem originates.

Social Studies:  Students will be working on their Chapter 4 choice board activity.  Some students will be building dioramas, creating dramatic scenes, writing postcards from New Spain to old Spain, creating a slideshow to explain the Columbian Exchange, or creating a fact file on one of our explorers.

Friday- 6:00-8:00pm Trunk or Treat

 Look at this Week:

ELA:  

Writer's Workshop:  We will continue to discuss expository writing, and read expository essays or articles about different inventors.  We will also continue to work on our writing stamina.

Reading Skills: We will continue to work on summarizing texts, and fining the key details using text features.

Word Work: Students will continue to work with words that have short vowel sounds, some example words are: breath, weather, feather, or crush, numb, and bundle.

Essential Vocab: locomotives, chugged, gadgets, phonograph, incandescent, sputtered, flop, cylinder, patents.


Math: Students will continue to work on finding the volume of rectangular prisms, and solving word problems.

Science:  Students will continue to investigate and model how animals use food matter to grow. (They will be working on an online simulator.)

Social Studies:  Students will continue to read Chapter 4 in our textbooks, "Spain builds an Empire." We will be discussing the Columbian Exchange, and viewing Christopher Columbus's exhibitions to the Americas through the lens of the 5 themes of geography.

Important Days:

Wednesday- Early Dismissal

Reading Skills: We will continue to practice finding the main or central idea of a text, and we will work on summarizing texts.

Word Work: Students will continue to work with words that have short vowel sounds, some example words are: breath, weather, feather, or crush, numb, and bundle.

ELA:  

Reading Skill: We will begin our unit "Inventors at Work."  We will review finding the main or central idea of a text.  

Spelling Pattern: Students will learn the spelling pattern for short vowel sounds, some example words are: breath, weather, feather, or crush, numb, bundle.

High Frequency Words: famous, chief, students, and yourself

Essential Vocab: locomotives, chugged, gadgets, phonograph, incandescent, sputtered, flop, cylinder, patents.


Math: Students will define and find prime and composite numbers; factors and multiples; and play our multiple game.  We will also learn two new multiplication strategies:  the over strategy and partial product.

Science:  Students will be investigating and modeling how animals use food matter to grow. (They will be working on an online simulator.)

Social Studies:  Students will learn about the 5 themes of geography:  movement, human environment/interactions, region, location, and place.  We will define these themes and look at different examples.

Social Studies: Primary vs Secondary Sources



 A Look at This Week:

ELA:  We will continue to build our writing stamina during Writer's Workshop.  Students will also be taking MAP testing, and writing stories from different perspectives.

Math: Students will begin to learn about volume and different multiplication strategies.  They will also be MAP testing.

Science:  Students will continue to learn about ecosystems.  We will be investigating why some animals are not growing and thriving in a rainforest restoration area in Costa Rica.

Social Studies:  Students will continue to go over primary and secondary sources.

Tuesday- Reading MAP testing

Wednesday- Math MAP testing
